Bring on an early election, say voters

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 17th, 2012 by admin

A majority of voters believe the independent MPs in parliament should back a no-confidence motion in Julia Gillard’s government to being on an early election.

A Galaxy poll for the Herald Sun shows that just three in 10 voters would tick the Labor box at the next federal election, which is worse than when the party was split in the 1950s when the DLP was formed.

The poll shows that Labor’s primary vote has fallen from 38 per cent at the August 2010 election to 30 per cent.

The support for the coalition under Tony Abbott continues to rise Windows 7 Activation Key, going from 43.6 per cent at the last election to 49 per cent – and up two points from February.

After preferences, the poll of 1019 voters – taken over the weekend and before Ms Gillard persuaded Speaker Peter Slipper to resign his position and banished Labor MP Craig Thomson to the cross benches – gave the coalition an election-winning lead of 56 per cent to 44 per cent.

The election is due in 18 months. However, the Galaxy poll found 52 per cent of voters believe the independent MPs should vote with the coalition in a no-confidence motion against the government Office 2007 Key, to force an early election.

Crucially Windows 7 product key free, one in five Labor voters support this position and 38 per cent of voters are opposed to an early election brought on by independents who have pledged to support Labor.

The Greatest Challenge Facing The Orthodox Jewish

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 17th, 2012 by admin

The last time a major nationwide survey of American Jewry was conducted was in the year 2000. The National Jewish Population Survey conducted by the Jewish Federations of North America demonstrated some startling statistics that turned on its head prior assumptions about the Jewish religious community. Whereas, in the previous generation Conservative Judaism was the most dynamic and largest voice in the denominational Jewish spectrum, Orthodoxy in the 2000s had transformed into the fastest growing Jewish movement in America.

In the previous generation replica watches, Orthodox Jews were a small minority of the American Jewish demographic and many assumed the entire movement would either disappear or continue on its path towards numerical irrelevancy. In the 2000s the Orthodox Jewish population had skyrocketed to such an extent that among people between the ages of 18-34, the next generation of Jewish leadership, Orthodoxy represented 34 percent of that population. Orthodox Judaism, as of 2000, held a greater percentage of young adults more so than any other denomination in Judaism in existence. The only other grouping to outpace that number were those who identified as unaffiliated.

The Orthodox Jewish community has a lot to be thankful for. It is a thriving and beautiful community of young and old, marrieds and singles, working professionals and retirees and people from all walks of life and backgrounds. In 2010 I wrote about the success of the Orthodox Community for the magazine First Things and much of what I wrote there still holds true two years later. Yet, there is one issue that threatens to undermine the entire system. This is the issue of the affordability of the day school system.

Rabbi Steven Weil, Executive Vice President of the Orthodox Union, recently spoke compellingly on this issue to members of the Harvard Jewish community at Harvard Hillel. He presented the stark reality that a couple earning a salary of $200,000 living in a New Jersey suburb in a modest home could expect to be asking for financial aid and living paycheck by paycheck once they have more than two children in the day school system. The day schools are not significantly overcharging when they put tuition at $24-25,000 a year per child. it costs a significant sum of money to maintain a school building, pay for teacher and administrative compensation, school supplies and the myriad of other expenses educational institutions must shoulder. In addition replica watches, day schools work very hard to maintain a policy of never turning any child away because of financial constraints so the additional monetary burden of tuition discounts and waivers adds to the difficulties the schools face.

There are many things that we must be doing as a community to address this challenge. The severity of this challenge cannot be overstated. As Rabbi Weil said during his lecture, “A sophisticated Jewish life requires a sophisticated Jewish education.” One option that must not be seriously considered is a reduction in the quality of our Jewish education. The curriculum must remain intensive and comprehensive. The pedagogical methods must be able to take advantage of the latest cutting edge advances in student focused learning, digital engagement and other tools. A watered down education could do worse than the opposite of producing a sophisticated adult; it could very well produce a cynical, disconnected adult who is equipped with the most basic and simplistic of a Jewish education.

There are policy actions that could be taken and there are legislative actions that could be taken to help alleviate this issue. There are also ways in which we can look to reduce costs for some aspects of the functioning of a school. Perhaps some schools could explore a shared health insurance plan that could cut costs for both the institutions and the employees?

In addition, at the most fundamental level, what is called for is deep engagement of the entire community with the schools in our midst. If a community is composed of singles, young couples, families, empty nesters and retirees then we need all five sectors of the population contributing to the schools. All too often, as Rabbi Weil pointed out replica watches, the only segment that contributes are the parents themselves and with the financial burden of tuition their ability to take part in charitable giving is significantly reduced. It is understandable that people who do not have children in school or people who just recently finished their parental educational duties or even people enjoying retirement would not place the local day school near the top of their philanthropic priorities. This is understandable but it is wrong. Without strong schools we risk the decline of the vitality, strength, depth and future of our community.

While communal organizations engage in the legislative and policy route, let us engage in the philanthropic route. If you give a certain percentage of your income to charity annually, pledge now to allocate a portion of that to your local day school. There are few centers for Jewish thriving that are as essential as the school and the synagogue. The time has come to appreciate the essential role our schools play in the continuity of the community and to comprehend the precarious situation they find themselves in. The Jewish future of tomorrow depends on the success of our schools today. We simply cannot afford to ignore that truth any longer.

Student Loans and the Education Crisis

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 17th, 2012 by admin

As anyone familiar with the subprime housing debacle will surely see that the current student loan crisis has a similar feeling about it. In fact, now that more careful statistical studies have been done Tattoo Gun Equipment, we are beginning to know the extent of the crisis. 70% of college graduates carry debt load, and the average amount owed topped $25,000 last year. Education debt is greater than credit card debt and car loan debt in America.

In 2007-2008, just before the great crash, lenders provided 17 billion dollars for student loans Tattoo Steel Machines, an increase of over 500% from the previous decade. What this means is that millions of Americans with college degrees are now indentured servants, bound to their masters for twenty years to a lifetime before they can take on more debt to buy a home or car. We used to say America is Opportunity. Now we say America is Debt.

A slew of new books, like Andrew Delbanco’s College, argue passionately for the survival of the residential college experience for our young people, but the reality of affording such an experience pleads for reform and fundamental change. Anthony Grafton’s review of College puts the matter succinctly when he says “…a shake-up is coming, and possibly something more dramatic.”

Speaking of dramatic, certainly one of the answers is online education: cheaper, more practical and widely available. Even the most prestigious are in the game: Harvard and MIT recently announced their free course offerings over the internet. MIT’s “Circuits and Electronics” enrolled 120,000 students, 10,000 of whom passed the first exam.

I currently teach an online Masters degree course in philosophy Tattoo Kits For Sale, a course monitored by the Distance Learning and Education Council, which approves and monitors online education for over 200,000 students nationally. The DETC is a non-profit agency which monitors online programs to insure high standards, and their monitoring is more rigorous than what counts for supervision for courses given on campus.

Those who support the residential college experience argue against distance learning on the grounds that students need to leave home and have the experience of peer interaction, personal freedom, and time to discover who they are as young adults. All true, but the cost of such an experience and the debt incurred negates the value of that experience.

For starters, one innovation may well be to cut the cost in half and support two-year residential programs with two years of distance learning. After all, students now in residence spend an inordinate amount of time online in their expensive dorms. Why not do more at home or in the library or coffee shop? Students can also hold down jobs to help pay for the residential experience.

The reality is that America is not going to return to the “good old days,” and we need to be creative, innovative and practical, especially in our responsibility to give the next generation a shot at preparing for a future that will severely challenge their knowledge and skills. Saddled with huge debt they won’t have a chance.

Angela Merkel braces for defeat in major German st

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 17th, 2012 by admin

CHANCELLOR Angela Merkel's party faces a drubbing in Germany's most populous state tonight in a snap election that could provide impetus to her main rivals in the countdown to 2013 national polls.

A week after voters in Greece and France clearly plumped for anti-austerity policies, the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) could also punish conservative champions of belt-tightening.

Some 13.2 million voters — more than a fifth of Germany’s electorate — are choosing a new regional parliament in the bellwether western state which hosts a major industrial base.

The region historically plays a big role in federal politics — in 2005, a lost vote in NRW prompted then chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to call a snap federal election which saw Dr Merkel wrest power from him.

Dr Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is fighting to capture the powerhouse state from a coalition made up of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) and ecologist Greens.

Despite surveys consistently revealing strong national support among German voters for Dr Merkel’s austerity drive in Europe and for her party Tattoo Supplies sale, the CDU is trailing the SPD by six or seven points in opinion polls taken in the NRW vote.

The polls suggest that SPD’s popular lead candidate, state premier Hannelore Kraft, could again be headed into a coalition with the Greens and, unlike last time, enjoy a majority.

The poll was triggered after her minority state government unexpectedly fell when the regional parliament failed to pass a draft budget after just 22 months in power.

Dr Merkel’s allies at federal level, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), have seen their forecasted share of the vote rise under the party’s NRW contender Christian Lindner.

Last year and earlier this year the FDP have humiliatingly failed to secure enough votes to get back into six state parliaments.

Dr Merkel has denied her tie-up with the FDP nationally will be influenced by the outcome of Sunday’s vote.

"The election on Sunday is an important state parliament election for North Rhine-Westphalia — no more, no less," she told the Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper this week.

But, under a headline asking "How much longer?" Best Tattoo Gun, Die Zeit newspaper commented that the NRW vote could be a "fateful day" for Dr Merkel. "Angela Merkel is at the peak of her power — and knows, now it becomes quite tough," it said.

Facing off against Ms Kraft as state premier is the CDU’s main candidate, Norbert Roettgen Cheap Tattoo Supplies, also Dr Merkel’s environment minister, whose gaffe-prone campaign has focused on austerity.

Another party to watch is the new-kids-on-the-block Pirate party, which has now entered three state parliaments since September on a platform of more transparency in the political process and Internet freedom.

SB1070 ante el Supremo ¿Qué está en juego

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 16th, 2012 by admin

No funcionará.

John Rumpelstiltskin McCain

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 15th, 2012 by admin

Advertisement Tattoo Supplies

Ronald Brownstein’s cover story in the September 2008 Atlantic, “Reconcilable Differences,” is a high-minded plea for bipartisanship so tedious that I doubt very many readers made it to the end. It pains me to say this because Brownstein is a gifted political reporter and also a friend. It pains me also because, buried inside the piece, Brownstein makes an important point: McCain’s dislike of Obama is personal.

This has been suggested before, especially in coverage of a weirdly angry letter McCain wrote to Obama in February 2006 (after Obama broke publicly with McCain over the pace of Senate ethics reform; click here to read the correspondence). But I don’t recall this previously being affirmed on a for-attribution basis by anyone close to McCain. I refer here partly to Brownstein himself (Brownstein’s wife, Eileen McMenamin, was until recently communications director in McCain’s Senate office) but mostly to John Weaver, McCain’s chief political strategist in 2000 and, at least initially, in 2008. Weaver left the McCain presidential campaign after losing a power struggle to the current campaign manager Tattoo Supplies, Rick Davis, and lately  Weaver has expressed some dissatisfaction with Davis’ strategy of attacking Obama. But in Brownstein’s piece, Weaver goes further, criticizing McCain himself as hostage to a gut-level resentment of the junior senator from Illinois. Weaver, Brownstein writes,

says McCain “does lack respect” for Obama, largely from the conviction that “he’s not ready, he’s green.” Weaver, like other observers, thought McCain’s attitudes about Obama stood in contrast with his personal respect for Hillary Clinton. “All campaigns reflect the personality of the candidate,” Weaver said. “The problem [our campaign] had in 2000 is, we made emotional decisions. Got wrapped up in the bubble. That’s a reflection of John. He at times makes emotional decisions, and when he does, they are almost always a mistake. That’s what you see right now. You’ve got to resist this decision-making in a bubble, being angry at Obama, or personalizing it. … That’s a danger.”

Obama’s task, then, is to provoke what late columnist Mary McGrory once termed a “Rumpelstiltskin scenario,” preferably while TV cameras are rolling. That is, he must find a subtle way to make McCain’s anger seem personal and utterly out of control. The best time to do this would be October, leaving McCain insufficient time to recover.

Can Ants Eat Your Computer

Posted in Breitling Replica on May 14th, 2012 by admin

Electronic devices near Houston Herve Leger sale, Texas, are under attack by a species known as the “crazy rasberry ant” (Paratrechina species near pubens), which is thought to have arrived as a stowaway on a cargo ship in 2002. According to the Associated Press Buy Herve Leger gown, the ants seem to be attracted to electrical equipment and have been “shorting out electrical boxes and messing up computers” wherever they go. This has raised concerns that the ants might cause serious damage to electrical equipment in sensitive locations like Houston’s Hobby Airport and NASA’s Johnson Space Center, as well as homes and businesses in the city. What do ants like about electronics?

No one really knows. Research has shown that some ant species are capable of detecting electromagnetic fields and may even use the Earth’s magnetic field as a directional cue as they search for food or nest sites. Their attraction to man-made electrical devices may be an accidental evolutionary byproduct of this natural ability.

The ants may also be drawn to pieces of electrical equipment because they make great nests. Invasive species like the crazy rasberry ant are adapted to environments that are constantly changing, so they are always searching for new homes. In the wild Buy Christian Audigier Clothes, these ants might nest in small cavities beneath fallen leaves, inside branches Replica DKNY Clothing, or at the base of palm fronds. Electrical switch boxes, gas meters, or your PC make ideal homes because they are dry and have small Buy Emilio Pucci Dresses, easily defendable entrances.

When crazy rasberry ants invade an electrical box, they can’t actually eat the equipment inside. Their jaws are not strong enough to cut through metal wires, but they can chew through the softer insulation around them, exposing the live wires and causing electrical shorts. (Other ant species, like leafcutter ants, are capable of cutting through thin metal wires, but they don’t seem to be attracted to electronics.) When an ant is shocked or electrocuted, it releases a chemical alarm pheromone that attracts its nestmates, triggering a cascade that results in a buildup of dead worker ants that can cause further problems for electronics.

These ants are difficult to control because they are ready to abandon their homes and find new ones at a moment’s notice, as when insecticides or poison baits are applied. Like many invasive ants, including some populations of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), which is also thought to have arrived to the United States via cargo ship, crazy rasberry ant colonies contain multiple queens. As Houston-area exterminators have learned Herve Leger sale, this allows them to reproduce faster than single-queen species, and makes it hard to kill the entire colony.

The Only Choices Are Bad Choices

Barack Obama Where to buy Replica Audemars Piguet Watches

Leave Washington in the winter, return in midsummer. What will strike you is first the heat, then the humidity—and then the certainty. Out in the world, there are shades of gray. Inside the Beltway, there are black-and-white solutions. And everybody who is anybody has a plan for Iraq.

Hillary Clinton has a three-point plan; Barack Obama has a move-the-soldiers-from-Iraq-to-Afghanistan plan. House Democrats have a plan to take most troops out by next March; Senate Democrats have a plan to take them out by April. Some Senate Republicans want the president to shrink the size of the U.S. military in Iraq; other Senate Republicans want to let the surge run its course. Search the Web, listen to the radio, watch the news Replica Chopard Watches, and you can hear people arguing that if only we had more troops, fewer troops, or no troops at all, then everything would be OK again.

What is missing from this conversation is a dose of humility. More to the point, what is missing is the recognition that every single one of these plans contains the seeds of potential disaster, even catastrophe.

More troops? I hardly need elaborate on what’s wrong with that plan, since so many in Congress do so every day. But for the record, I’ll repeat the obvious: More troops means more American casualties, maybe many more casualties. Worse, the very presence of U.S. soldiers creates strife in some parts of Iraq Concord Replica Watches, aggravating Iraqis, motivating al-Qaida, sparking violence. Besides, we’ve tried the surge, and the surge hasn’t brought the results we wanted. And anyway, the surge simply can’t be maintained Where buy best Replica Sinn Watches, let alone expanded. There aren’t that many more troops to send, even if we wanted to send them.

Fewer troops? This plan sounds like a reasonable compromise: Neither surge nor cut-and-run, just leave a few guys on the ground to train the Iraqis, guard the border, and fight the terrorists. It also sounds a touch naive: So, in the middle of a vast civil war, small groups of Americans will withdraw to some neutral outpost and announce that they would no longer like to be shot at, please? Both “guarding the border” and “fighting terrorism” are hard to do effectively without involving ourselves in wider political and ethnic struggles. There is also trouble with the “train the Iraqis” part of the plan, as Stephen Biddle spelled out in the Washington Post last week, since “training Iraqis” invariably puts us in the middle of military conflict. Besides How to buy Replica IWC Watches, fewer Americans could mean more Iraqi violence; more Iraqi violence could mean more American casualties—not to mention more Iraqi casualties—which defeats the purpose of the plan altogether.

No troops? Though deeply appealing to the “we told you so” crowd, this plan is clothed in the greatest degree of hypocrisy. How many of the people who clamor for intervention in Darfur will also be clamoring to rush back into Iraq when the full-scale ethnic cleansing starts taking place? How many will take responsibility for the victims of genocide? I’m not saying there will be such a catastrophe Discount Replica Cartier Watches, but there could be. Mass ethnic murders have certainly been carried out in Iraq before. Other possibilities include the creation of an Iranian puppet state; the creation of an al-Qaida outlaw state; or merely a regional war involving, say, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, just for starters, and maybe Israel and Gaza, as well. Maybe these things would have never happened if we hadn’t gone there in the first place, but if we leave, we’ll be morally responsible.

Of course, I don’t want to exaggerate: There are people who know that there is no perfect solution for Iraq. They tend to be people who are not running for president, vice president, or any other public office. Last weekend, I met a Marine about to depart for his second tour in Iraq. He wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about going, nor was he particularly optimistic about what could be achieved. But he wasn’t demanding to stay at home. If nothing else, he felt obliged to stick by the many Iraqis who had helped the Marines and who might well be murdered if the Marines left for good.

He had, in other words, perceived the only truth of which we can really be certain: There are no obvious solutions in Iraq, only policy changes that could make some things better and some things worse. Maybe much worse.
